The end of the Minor, the result is Qlippy

After a couple of very busy weeks, it is time to leave the Minor. Our group scored a great result, and i’m really proud of that. For the people who don’t know, we spend almost a half year building a product called Qlippy. Qlippy would be a video-community website specialized in music-videoclips.

The chalenge of this all was, we build it in Flex and a Ruby on Rails backend. Using these new techniques was a great experience, but also a big pain in the ass. We had to learn Flex, Ruby on Rails and also make a communication between that. Because everything so new, not everything was very well documented, but step by step we build our application.

We have tried to make the application as complete as possible, but didn’t have enough time. Nevertheless we build a lot of functionality, and learned a lot of this all. Some learning points:

  • We used the wrong developing method. A method that would be better for developing the application is “Getting Real” from 37signals
  • We needed version management
  • We had to share more information and code with other groups, for solving problems faster, and building components faster.
  • We needed more structure. We used a simple framework, but we also had to make programming rules like naming

So no complete application. Also I don’t have a server that can run our application. But I made some screenshots, so maybe you get an idea of the application.

Off course there’s a lot more to show, so maybe I’ll make a screen-caputered movie in the future. Now we’re talking about the future, there will be a new Web 2.0 / RIA Minor comming up. This Minor also has the possibility to finish a product of the old Minor. So I hope the new Minor people will be interested in our product, and like the idea of finishing this product, that would be great! Don’t worry, because there’s still a lot of work to do! So please contact me if you’re interested.

I would like to thank everybody in the Minor for their support and the social environment. For the next Web 2.0 / RIA Minor….good luck!

Yeah, indeed awesome screenshots! And I’ve also seen the product running in realtime > it really looks very, very nice.
Niels, isn’t Peter (from CM) willing to share some hard-disk space on a server which supports both Flex and ROR? … hmm, how about you Waldo? ;) Too bad I’ve chosen to do AJAX last minor… but hey.. I had to start somewhere ;)

The screenshots are really awesome indeed, but seeing the product running in realtime is even better. I am proud to be one of the co-builders of Qlippy. When we started building i couldn’t imagine something cool like this might come out.
It would be cool if we had the chance to finnish Qlippy, but hey………we’ll see :) And i think to give visitors a complete picture making a screen-captured movie would be a great idea Niels :)
